Indicator 14: Postsecondary Outcomes

The U.S. Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) requires states to report on postsecondary outcomes for students with disabilities.

Federal Definition

Percent of youth who are no longer in secondary school, had IEPs in effect at the time they left school, and were:

A. Enrolled in higher education within one year of leaving high school.
B. Enrolled in higher education or competitively employed within one year of leaving high school.
C. Enrolled in higher education or in some other postsecondary education or training program; or competitively employed or in some other employment within one year of leaving high school.

(20 U.S.C. 1416(a)(3)(B))

District Responsibilities

  • The state contracts with Wayne State University to collect and report data through a survey. Therefore, districts do not have any required responsibilities.
  • The survey is administered to the students of one-third of the local school districts of each intermediate school district on a rotating basis.
  • MI-TOP encourages district personnel to promote awareness of the survey within their district and help improve response rates.
  • Districts can volunteer to partner with Wayne State to improve response rates. Contact Charo Hulleza at Wayne State University for more information.
